How to make a healthy orange julius

With the warm sun and temperatures we have seen this week, sweaty faces, sticky hair and dirty toes are abundant in our household.

Days are filled with tasks such as watering the garden, deadheading new window box flowers, riding bikes, practicing on stilts, reading in the shade of trees and planning what we’ll be up to this summer.  With all of this come two hungry and thirsty girls, one who is at the stage of being so b-o-r-e-d with everything that is offered on a daily basis, so this mama had to get creative.

We happened to have orange juice in the fridge, and once I spied that and was already thinking of what I’d throw into the BlendTec (because you have one, not a meal goes by without using it-or finding ways to use it!), I thought of the days when I was a kid-ack, that’s now well beyond 20 years ago, when we would get the occasional treat of an Orange Julius.  Yes, I’m talking about the kind that is oh, so tasty but filled with goodness knows what.  And because we can’t have that, I created this:

Healthy Orange Julius

***I did this 2 ways, once with raw milk (wow) and once with coconut milk (totally does the job, just less foamy/thicky)

1/2 cups orange juice (freshly squeezed would be best, but we had Tropicana in the fridge) or 2 whole oranges

3/4 cup raw milk (or coconut milk was also really great)

1 cup ice

2 pitted medjool dates

1/4 tsp vanilla stevia

1 Tablespoon chia seeds

I threw it all into the BlendTec and zapped it there for about 45 seconds.  It turns out sweet and frothy with shavings of ice, just like I remember the good ole Orange Julius days at the mall.

We also determined they would make fantastic popsicles-IF there were any left over.

We’ve now had this twice in the past two days-once for an after school snack and once for breakfast next to gf pancakes with lots of butter.

If you’ve got a treat that reminds of your childhood, I’d love to have you share it below.
