Need to supplement your breast milk?

Over the years I have worked with several mama’s who need to find an alternative to supplement their breastmilk.  An acquaintance of mine actually had Raynaud’s Disease (of the nipple) and physically was in too much pain to nurse her baby.  Another mama was running out of milk due to stress and sought out breast milk from others in her circle that had milk a plenty.

Whatever the need and reason, there are other ways of giving your baby the proper nutrition he or she needs to grow and develop their brain and body.  Below is a formula created by a friend and contributed to My Healthy Beginning, who needed to supplement her milk and is now going straight to goat’s milk at 14 months of age.

There are other links online you can find for resources like this, but it’s always helpful to find one that a trusted source has used.

Goat Milk Formula

2 c. raw goat milk-I get several gallons at once and freeze in 2 or 3 cup amounts in glass canning jars – leave plenty of room on top. It freezes very well.

2 c. filtered water

¼ c. (4 T.) liquid whey from goat yogurt (strain yogurt through coffee filter placed in a colander – overnight & in fridge. The liquid that drains is the whey.)

1 to 2 tsp blackstrap molasses (for constipation; use smaller amount at first and adjust as necessary)

1 tsp. DHA Care (3 Care Therapeutics)

1 tsp. unrefined sunflower oil (Rapunzel or Driftless organics, which I found at Mississippi Market)

1 tsp. organic extra virgin olive oil

2 tsp. virgin coconut oil (virgin is important)

1 tsp. raw agave nectar (optional – for extra carbohydrates)

6 drops B-12 (DNA Labs)

4 drops Bio-D Mulsion (Biotics Research Corp.)

1 tsp. Infant’s Probiotic (Udo’s Choice – also found at Mississippi Market) – this dissolves best into the formula; especially helpful if you are using a supplemental nursing system)

1 tsp Maxi Baby-C (100mg) (Country Life – found at Vitamin Shoppe)

Mix all ingredients together in a blender. (if you don’t blend it well, the oil will float on top). Make it daily or every other day for optimal freshness and nutritional value.

Places to obtain ingredients: (it’s a lot of work at first, but once you have everything in the house, it lasts a while)

Local co-op or natural foods store

Order your supplements from a practitioner or wholesale distributor.

Look up your local growers for raw goats or cows milk
