Welcome to The 1st Annual My Healthy Beginning Experience It’s tough to keep up with the trends, philosophies and resources when you’re planning your family, isn’t it? Believe me, it gets easier when you’re a veteran mom, though I still seek out my wise-women (you know who you are) for tricks of the trade when times get tough and I find myself the contender in corner A with two small blonde contenders in corner B. Being pregnant and planning our family were such exciting times for us. In my line of work, I get to witness the miracle of birth, support couples in planning their birth, watch them get informed (and consequently REALLY excited about what they’re up to) and coach them through those early childhood years. But here’s the thing. Not all soon to be and new mamas are surrounded by people that empower her. Not all mamas know which brands are the best for use on their bodies and on the precious skin of their newborns. Not all new mamas know how to breastfeed or why it’s important. Some moms find they can’t breastfeed and need other nutrient dense options for their newborns. Some moms go back to work after a mere three months of getting to know their babies. It’s the right decision for some and for others, they find a way to make being home with their baby or working part time fit their lifestyle. Some moms want a natural birth and some don’t. I always encourage parents to become educated first and then make that decision. Some stay put in their commitment to plan A and others take a ninety degree turn in the opposite direction. Either way, they are empowered to make the choice they are making. There are times when we as expecting and new parents:
Any veteran mom will admit to all of the above on some level. Let me share with you a bit about my world. From the time I was 10 or 12 I knew I was going to deliver babies (I don’t for the record). I was the girl who ran her own Babysitter’s Club on Clayton Drive, cared for three younger siblings, babysat cousins endless amounts of time and could change a diaper and soothe a colicky baby with my eyes closed. Babies, pregnancy and birth fascinated me. Still does. Daydreaming during my college courses about working with pregnant women had me researching homebirth midwifery options. That research led me to the work of a Birth Doula. When I learned I could support mothers throughout a pregnancy and postpartum that sealed the deal for me. It wasn’t so much about the birth itself as it was about the long term relationship I would develop with a couple. In this work you become family. Being in private practice as a massage and craniosacral therapist also allowed me inside the emotional and physical space mama’s hold so closely. Combining that practice with my Birth Doula work was magical. A few years later we became pregnant with our first daughter. Because I knew birth, because I trusted it and because since the day I knew I’d carry a baby someday, I knew I’d give birth at home. We did, twice over four years, to healthy 8 lb 8 oz and 9 lb 4 oz baby girls. During that time I had founded the My Healthy Beginning Magazine. Spending twenty plus hours a week with mama’s asking the same questions and seeking the same support was all I needed to find a medium in which we could reach tens of thousands of mama’s at a time. I poured my heart into that project, lost a little of myself, got it back, and set my sites on an event that would give every mama what she really wants: an opportunity to be inspired and empowered.
Having landed in a “what is my real purpose here” kind of space, I was blessed with a transformative learning weekend. It changed my life. Everyday since I have achieved more clarity and with more clarity comes empowerment, with empowerment comes more accomplishment and with accomplishment, for me, came peace of mind. Peace of mind that I could do something I thought not possible on my own. I recreated an event I had dreamed up when in 2006 My Healthy Beginning readers said to me, “when are you going to bring this community together? When are you going to have an event?” I heard you. It’s here. I dove into personal development, reestablished relationships, made amends with family members, shared one aha moment after another with friends. My husband and I saved our marriage. Why is this important, you ask? Because when I was pregnant with our first baby I brought to fruition a team of wise women to aide me in my life transitions. I reached out to the brands I knew and trusted, the resources I had long since been referring to other mama’s. I created a village. And creating that village for soon to be and new mama’s is what I’m up to. Want in? Listen to this! Still seeking sponsors.
